The STRIKERS Travelling Fellowship
Bio:ย Andrew is a postdoctoral SCREDS Clinical Lecturer in Trauma & Orthopaedics at the University of St Andrews, and is pursuing dual-qualification as a surgeon in T&O and a physician in Sport & Exercise Medicine. He is motivated to bring the two specialties into closer alignment through his work in academic, clinical, and governance roles.
He was awarded the BASEM 2024 Research Bursary in support of his work evaluating and mitigating the multisystem health effects experienced by patients awaiting joint replacement surgery for arthritis. He was awarded the BASEM 2024 Travelling Fellowship in support of his multinational orthopaedics & sports medicine programme: The STRIKERS Travelling Fellowship (Surgical Treatment & Rehabilitation of Injuries in Kicking, Explosive & Running Sports), which includes work in centres of excellence in the UK, Ireland, Qatar, and UAE.
His Sports Medicine practice is varied, with a number of responsibilities in elite performance environments. He is a Club Doctor at Heart of Midlothian FC in the Scottish Premiership, and is part of the regular matchday medical team at international and club rugby fixtures with the Scottish Rugby Union and Glasgow Warriors. He has experience covering major sporting fixtures including the World Athletics Indoor Championships and DP World Tour golf events, and is a Research Fellow at the European Tour Performance Institute working on health, injury, and performance in golf. He is an active Member of the Faculty of Sport & Exercise Medicine, sitting on the Elite Sport Working Group for Ethics and Whistleblowing, and the Diplomate Committee for MSK Medicine.
In T&O his interests are lower limb sports injuries, trauma, joint preservation and replacement. He is a Specialty Registrar on the South East Scotland Orthopaedic Training Programme, and works closely with the National Orthopaedic Treatment Centres at NHS Fife and NHS Golden Jubilee University National Hospital. He is Chair of the SCOTTISH Research Network (Scottish Centres for Orthopaedic Treatment & Innovation in Surgery & Healthcare), Co-Chair of the Scottish Hip Fracture Audit (Research Group), and leads a number of national and international collaborative research studies.
