BASEM Foundation Skills Course

The BASEM Foundation Skills Course is a three-and-a-half-day residential course offering an introduction to the breadth of Sport and Exercise Medicine, which encompasses Exercise Medicine, Musculoskeletal Medicine and Team Care.
 
The course is intended for delegates wishing to discover the breadth of subjects covered by ‘Sport and Exercise Medicine’. It would be suitable for those considering developing or extending an early interest in SEM, those involved in Sports Injury Management, but without the wider knowledge of SEM and those simply wishing to increase their general knowledge in this area of medicine.

What to Expect

A three and a half day residential course aimed at providing a thorough grounding in areas that make up Sport and Exercise Medicine (SEM).

Who is the course for?

The course is open to any Doctor. It is also open to Allied Medical Professionals and Medical Students, provided they have background knowledge at a level suitable to benefit from this course. This will depend on the individuals CV.

  • The course will address the evidence for physical activity in disease prevention and management and offer an introduction to exercise prescription.
  • It will cover applied anatomy and examination of the major joints, addressing principles of injury management and focusing on those injuries that are most commonly seen in practice.
  • It will cover a range of hot topics in Team Care including concussion, anti-doping, sports nutrition, event cover and the role of the SEM Doctor within clubs and teams.

By the end of the BASEM Foundation Skills Course it is intended that delegates should:

  • Be able to give simple physical activity advice to the general population.
  • Be able to examine the major joints with a degree of confidence and be able to recognise common MSK problems associated with those joints.
  • Be able to give simple rehabilitation advice for the ankle, knee and shoulder.
  • Be able to give simple nutrition advice to those who exercise.
  • Have a greater awareness of the issues surrounding team care including concussion, anti-doping and event management.
  • Have a greater awareness of what the speciality of SEM means and what career opportunities and career pathways are available within the speciality.

A date for the 2027 Foundation Course is yet to be confirmed

The BASEM Foundation Skills Course takes place at Lilleshall National Sports Centre.

The course is residential with a non residential option and will start at 2pm Sunday afternoon and run through to  Wednesday afternoon.
