Lex is a Reader in Exercise Physiology in the School of Sport and Exercise Sciences at the University of Kent, where he has worked since 2011. Lex’s principle research focuses on the naturally occurring and non-damaging pain that arises from intense and prolonged exercise (exercise-induced pain) and how this impacts exercise performance. Through a psychophysiological approach he employs a variety of techniques, including transcranial magnetic stimulation, peripheral nerve stimulation, electromyography, experimental pain induction, think aloud, and post-exercise interview. Lex is a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and a Fellow of the European College of Sports Science, and he is the School’s Director of Research and Innovation. He is also a Lead for ‘Future Human’, one of Kent’s three newly established Signature Research Themes which are a key part of the University’s strategy to further develop its global research profile. Future Human explores the use of science and technology for human augmentation, optimisation and enhancement, and brings together a wide range of ideas and approaches through cross-disciplinary collaboration.
