2018 BASEM Travelling Fellowship Winner: Dr James Bilzon

Bio: James is Professor of Human and Applied Physiology in the Department for Health at the University of Bath.ย Following a 13-year career as a Ministry of Defence (MoD) Human Scientist, he joined the University of Bath as a Senior Lecturer and Director of Studies for the MSc in Sport and Exercise Medicine. He was Head of the Universityโ€™s Department for Health from 2011-2017, where he embarked on an ambitious plan to secure its place among the elite Higher Education Institutions for Sport Health & Exercise Science in the UK.

He was promoted to Professor in March 2016 and continues to lead a research programme related to Sport and Exercise Medicine, as Director of the Universityโ€™s Centre for DisAbility Sport and Health (DASH), co-Director of the Centre for Analysis of Motion, Entertainment Research and Applications (CAMERA) and co-investigator on the Arthritis Research UK Centre for Sport Exercise and Osteoarthritis (CSEO). He continues to work closely with the Armed Forces and, in 2012, was appointed as Honorary Civilian Consultant Advisor (HCCA) in Sport & Exercise Medicine to the British Army.

James has secured >ยฃ10 million in research grant funding and published over 75 peer-reviewed journal articles, primarily in the area of injury prevention and exercise rehabilitation science. He recently jointly hosted the BASEM/FSEM 2017 Annual Conference. James will be supported by the BASEM Travelling Fellowship during his research sabbatical at the Miller School of Medicine, University of Miami from March to August 2018. His sabbatical research is focused on the therapeutic effects of exercise on cardiometabolic component risks and functional capacity in persons with physical disabilities and disabling osteoarthritis.
