Research: The SPORT-EMPOWER Project –ย Supporting patients with osteoarthritis requiring treatment with arthroplasty: Evaluating mechanisms for promoting health optimisation with exercise recommendations & non-surgical interventions
Bio: Andrew is a SCREDS Clinical Lecturer & Specialty Registrar in Trauma & Orthopaedics (T&O) at the University of St Andrews. He is pursuing dual-qualification as a physician in Sport & Exercise Medicine via the CESR/Portfolio Pathway. His orthopaedic interests are lower limb sports injuries, joint preservation, joint replacement, and trauma.
Andrew works in elite performance environments as Club Doctor for Heart of Midlothian FC and Heriots RFC, and as part of the matchday medical teams for Glasgow Warriors and the Scotland Rugby Union international teams. He sits on the Diplomate Committee for MSK Medicine at the Faculty of Sport & Exercise Medicine, and is motivated to help the SEM specialty grow with ever closer collaboration alongside clinicians and academics in T&O and MSK practice, public health, and primary care.
The focus of his academic work is on the intersection of Orthopaedics, Sport & Exercise Medicine, and Population Health. He co-leads nationwide research networks: the SCOTTISH Network (Scottish Centres for Orthopaedic Treatment & Innovation in Surgery & Healthcare), and SCOTnet (Scottish Collaborative Orthopaedic Trainees Research Network (SCOTnet). He is Deputy Chair of the Scottish Hip Fracture Audit Research Group, and recently submitted his PhD in T&O, which involved leading the global International Multicentre Project for Auditing COVID-19 in T&O (IMPACT).
