The External Training and Development Sponsorship is awarded on biannual basis and offers sponsorship towards the cost of an external (non-BASEM) course/conference. This is to encourage members to attend relevant SEM courses/conferences that they are unable to get sponsorship for through the National Health Service or other employers; with a purpose of gaining further experience, knowledge and skills.
There are 5 awards available in 2026 with the opportunity to receive up to £1,000 sponsorship per award.
In Round 1, there are 3 awards available.
In Round 2, there are 2 awards available.

Previous Winners
- The applicant should be a member of BASEM in good standing.
- The applicant must have been a member of BASEM for 2 consecutive years immediately preceding deadline date.
- A maximum of 1 application per course/conference per annum will be awarded. It may be wise to check with the BASEM office before you submit an application for the specific course/conference of your choice.
- Retrospective requests for this award, which have taken place prior to the application closing date, will not be considered and travel must have taken place within the award year (12 months from confirmation of receiving the award).
- The Applicant has not received this award in the past 2 consecutive years eg. received award in 2015, cannot apply again until 2018
- The award money should be used to support the individual applicant only.
- Reimbursement of the award money will be made for standard rate travel and course/conference costs only.
- The award money may not be used for any other purpose that that submitted in the application.
The recipient of the award will confirm in writing (signed contract) their acceptance of the award, that they agree to the following terms and conditions and to BASEM’s Privacy Policy:-
- Travel and accommodation should be booked by the recipient and will be reimbursed upon successful completion of a report for BASEM Today (BASEMs quarterly newsletter magazine). The applicant must ensure that travel and accommodation are as economical as possible. Copies of itemised receipts must be provided by the recipient.
- The award money may not be used for any other purpose than that submitted in the application.
- The recipient of the award will provide a written report for a future issue of BASEM Today. This report should highlight the overall experience at the event including additional knowledge and skills gained and how these will be used in future practice.
- The recipient of the award agrees to their image, a short biography and written report being featured in BASEM publications, BASEM website, social media, and future marketing of the BASEM External Training and Development Sponsorship.
- The recipient agrees to complete their course/conference within the award year. Should this not happen, BASEM reserves the right to rescind the award.
- The recipient of the award agrees to maintain membership of BASEM for at least 2 consecutive years post award.
- By accepting the award and for any reason the award recipient is unable to complete the course/conference, the recipient agrees to return any money reimbursed back to BASEM with a 3% interest charge.
- BASEM requests that the Association be credited regarding any completed research and for any future research/articles written because of receiving this monetary award.

If this is your first time applying for a BASEM Award, you will need to create an account. If you have applied for a BASEM award previously using Good Grants, you can log in using your existing details.Â
Once logged into your account you will be able to apply to all of BASEMs Awards open at that time. You are able to save and come back to applications as much as you want prior to the closing date. Any incomplete applications when the application window closes will not be put forward to the Awards Committee.Â
Once the closing date has passed, the Awards team check all applications to ensure anonymity before forwarding to the Awards Committee.Â
As part of the application, applicants will be asked to provide:
- An introduction explaining the research (max 500 words)
- Your educational Aims & Objectives (max 500 words)
- A statements on how your project meets the objectives of BASEM (max 250 words)
- A statement on how the course/conference will support your future practice (max 250 words)
- An anonymised CV
Applicants will receive notice of their success or otherwise 8 weeks after the closing date. Notifications will be sent via email.

All applications are submitted via the Good Grants platform. Once the application window is closed, applications are checked to ensure anonymity by the Awards team. before being forwarded to the BASEM Awards Committee. Each member of the committee will review the applications against a standard marking template and scores will be collated. The application with the highest marks will be awarded.
The judge’s decision is final.Â
Feedback will be available upon request.
The recommendation(s) of the Awards Committee will be ratified by the BASEM Non Executive Board.
The Awards Committee may not make an award if the applications are not of an adequate standard.
