Prior to this he has served on the Board as a Trustee / Chair of BASEMโ€™s Scientific Advisory Group and oversaw the activities of the various BASEM Awards Committees from 2020-2023. Prof Wheeler, both individually and as the Chair of the Board of Trustees, helps to provide strategic direction for BASEM, overseeing all activities of this membership association, ensuring the needs of its members are met and it Charitable Objects are fulfilled

Prof. Patrick Wheeler is a Consultant in Sport & Exercise Medicine at the Leicester Hospitals Sports Medicine Dept, where he has held his consultant position since 2009 after becoming one of the first doctors in the UK to be entered onto the Sport & Exercise Medicine (SEM) Specialist Register, held by the General Medical Council. In the Leicester Sports Medicine Dept, he has an active clinical practice specialising in the medical management of musculoskeletal disease, he supports doctors in training, and is the current Head of Service. Additionally to his NHS work, Prof Wheeler works 2 days a week for Loughborough University, originally starting in 2013 and being awarded his clinical Professorship in 2021. He has been the principal investigator for a number of NHS interventional studies, recruiting more than 1100 patients to his studies and has co-authored 60 papers in journals to date.

Prof. Wheeler has previously worked extensively in elite and professional sports. He has been the Chief Medical Officer to several National Governing Bodies and to one International Federation, he worked at the English Institute of Sport 2007-2013. He worked for an NGB at one Olympic Games, and for ParalympicsGB at 3 Paralympic Games. He stepped down from working with sports teams (mostly) after Rio2016 to devote more time to his NHS, University, and Medical Speciality roles.

Prof Wheeler has previously been on the Council of the UKโ€™s Faculty of Sport & Exercise Medicine (FSEM) from 2016-2020 as an elected position on Council, and from 2020 to Sept 2023 was appointed by the Council as FSEMโ€™s Honorary Treasurer. In these roles he helped the medical faculty develop a number of projects in this medical speciality, with the last few years serving as a key Office Bearer with primary responsibilities for financial governance. He stood down from the FSEM in Sept 2023 to be able to take on the BASEM Chair role without an ongoing potential conflict of interest.

On a personal note, Prof Wheeler has been a member of BASEM for more than 20 years and in his role as Chair hopes to continue to help the underlying remit of this organisation thrive, meeting both todayโ€™s needs and those of the future.
