BASEM Undergraduate Elective Award in association with the Undergraduate Sport and Exercise Medicine Society (USEMS)

Medical Electives are a unique opportunity for undergraduate students to pursue a specific interest not otherwise covered during university teaching.  For many students’ electives may be their first extended exposure to Sport and Exercise Medicine (SEM). 

Undergraduate Elective Award is awarded on a twice annual basis to enable BASEM Undergraduate members to travel at home, or overseas for at least 4 weeks, to study sports or exercise medicine at one or more centres of excellence with a purpose of gaining further experience, knowledge, and skills. 

The monetary award is worth up to £1,000 per recipient, with a total of 4 awards available per year.  The Elective must be completed within 12 months of receiving confirmation of the award.

Please read through the below important information about the the Undergraduate Elective Award.

Eligibility and Rules of Entry
  1. The applicant should be an undergraduate studying a health care related course at a UK university in good standing.
  2. The applicant must be an undergraduate student member of BASEM for at least 6 months prior to the deadline date.
  3. Retrospective requests, prior to the closing date, for this award will not be considered and travel must take place within the award year (12 months from confirmation of receiving the award).
  4. The award money should be used to support the individual applicant only.
  5. Reimbursement of the award money will be made for standard rate travel and accommodation fees only.
  6. The award money may not be used for any other purpose than that which is submitted in the application.
  7. The applicant must not miss any mandatory university teaching to undertake their elective without prior authorisation.
  8. The applicant must plan to undertake a minimum of four weeks on their Elective.
  1. The recipient of the award will confirm in writing (signed contract) their acceptance of the award, that they agree to the following terms and conditions and to BASEM/USEMS Privacy Policies.
  2. If not already included as part of the application, on notification of success the recipient must:

    – finalise their itinerary and provide written confirmation from the Centre or Centres of Excellence that this is acceptable to awards@basem.co.uk;

    – submit an approval letter from the university healthcare university department confirming the dates of the elective and approval for the recipient to attend on the specified dates;

    – submit a letter from the elective hosts confirming the placement.

  3. Travel and accommodation should be booked by the recipient and will be reimbursed upon successful completion of a written report for BASEM Today (BASEMs quarterly newsletter magazine) post elective. The applicant must ensure that travel and accommodation are as economical as possible.  Copies of itemised receipts must be provided by the recipient.  Please note the award money may not be used for any other purpose than that submitted in the application.

  4. The recipient of the award will provide a written report post elective, for a future issue of BASEM Today. This report should highlight the overall experience at the elective including additional knowledge and skills gained and how these will be used in future practice.

  5. The recipient of the award agrees to their image, a short biography and written report being featured in BASEM publications, BASEM website, social media and future marketing of the BASEM Undergraduate Elective Award.

  6. The recipient agrees to complete their travel within the award year. Should this not happen, BASEM reserves the right to rescind the award.

  7. The recipient of the award agrees to maintain membership of BASEM for at least 2 consecutive years post award.

  8. By accepting the award and for any reason the award recipient is unable to complete the elective, the recipient agrees to return any money reimbursed back to BASEM with a 3% interest charge.

  9. BASEM requests that the Association be credited regarding the completed elective for any future research/articles written because of receiving this monetary award.

Once logged into your account you will be able to apply to all of BASEMs Awards open at that time. You are able to save and come back to applications as much as you want prior to the closing date. Any incomplete applications when the application window closes will not be put forward to the Awards Committee. 

Once the closing date has passed, the Awards team check all applications to ensure anonymity before forwarding to the Awards Committee. 

Applicants will be able to track the progress of their application(s) via their Good Grants portal. 

Applicants will receive notice of their success or otherwise 8 weeks after the closing date. Notifications will be sent via email.

All applications are submitted via the Good Grants platform. Once the application window is closed, applications are checked to ensure anonymity by the Awards team, before being forwarded to the USEMS Awards Committee. Each member of the committee will review the applications against a standard marking template and scores will be collated. The application with the highest marks will be awarded.

The recommendation(s) of the USEMS Awards Committee will be ratified by the BASEM Awards Committee and Non-Executive Board.

Should applications of significant interest to BASEM be received, BASEM reserves the right  to consider further funding at the discretion of the Trustees.

The judge’s decision is final.

The Awards Committee may not make an award if the applications are not of an adequate standard.
