Keynote Announced: Beyond the Image When the scan doesn’t tell the whole story Tickets Still Available What happens when an athlete’s recovery challenges what the imaging seemed to tell us? At BASEM Conference 2026, Dr Carles Pedret will take to the stage for Beyond the Image: Questions That Changed my Practice – a keynote exploring the clinical questions that emerge when injuries don’t follow the expected course. Drawing on real cases involving soleus, rectus femoris, hamstring and calf injuries, Dr Pedret will examine how unexpected findings have challenged assumptions and shaped his clinical practice and research. A sports medicine physician specialising in muscle and tendon injury, Dr Pedret combines extensive clinical experience with advanced musculoskeletal imaging and advises professional sports organisations internationally on complex injuries and return to performance. His keynote will ask what ultrasound and MRI can genuinely tell us – and what they cannot. It will also look ahead to emerging technologies, including AI, while returning to something fundamental to sport and exercise medicine: the value of curiosity, uncertainty and continually questioning our assumptions. Chaired by Mr Michael Brownlow, Senior Player Health Manager at the Premier League, this session examines how research, clinical expertise and policy development are being brought together to support player health and welfare across academy and first-team environments. The programme spans mental health and interdisciplinary collaboration, the evolution of head injury research, protocols and regulation, and the Premier League’s wider approach to advancing player health.
