BOSEM Article Processing Award

Launched 2024, BASEM is supporting members to publish their work in the British Medical Journal Open SEM (BOSEM) by paying the full Article Processing Charges upon successful acceptance of an article.
No set deadline

The BOSEM Article Processing Charges Award is awarded on an annual basis and offers members the chance to have the full Article Processing Charges paid for by BASEM for any articles successfully accepted to be published in BOSEM.

Launched in 2024, the aim of this new BASEM award is to support our members to raise awareness of their work through BASEM’s communications, in addition to having their work published and viewed by an extensive readership.

There are 25 awards available in the each year however, this will be reviewed annually.  The article must be published within the award year of 2026.

There is no deadline for applications for this award, however, applicants are advised to apply early, otherwise, funds may already have been allocated.  Once all 25 awards have been paid, applications will close for 2026.

Please read through the below important information about the BOSEM Article Processing Charges Award.

Eligibility and Rules of Entry
  1. The applicant should be a member of BASEM in good standing.
  2. The applicant must have been a member of BASEM for 2 consecutive years preceding their application.
  3. A maximum of 1 article per calendar year per member.
  4. Retrospective applications, after the article is published, will not be considered.
  5. Applicants should submit their application as early as possible.
  6. Article Processing Charges (APC) will be paid on a first come, first served basis.
  7. The APCs will be paid for articles involving human studies only, in aspects of sport, exercise, or musculoskeletal medicine.
  8. Once all 25 awards have been paid, BASEM will close the award for 2026 and no longer accept applications.
  9. The APC will be paid directly to BOSEM and not the applicant.

The recipient of the award will confirm in writing (signed contract) their acceptance of the award, that they agree to the following terms and conditions and to BASEM’s Privacy Policy:-

  1. If BASEM agree to pay the Article Processing Charge (APC) for the submitted article, the applicant is not guaranteed the award until the below criteria has been met:

    a. The member has made an application before the article is published and BASEM has agreed to pay the APC.

    b. BOSEM have accepted to publish the submitted article.

    c. The member has informed BASEM as soon as possible upon notice from BOSEM of success of their article.

    b. BASEM have confirmed funding is still available for that award year.

  2. The applicant must forward over the payment link to awards@basem.co.uk where a member of the awards team will process the APCs. 
  3. Any research accepted for publication by BMJ Open SEM may be publicised by BASEM.
  4. BASEM will be named as a funder of the publishing costs.
  5. The recipient of the award agrees to their image, a short biography and written report being featured in BASEM publications, BASEM website, social media, and future marketing of the BASEM BOSEM Article Processing Charges Award.
  6. The recipient of the award agrees to maintain membership of BASEM for at least 2 consecutive years post award.
  7. BASEM requests that the Association be credited regarding any completed research and for any future research/articles written because of receiving this monetary award.
  1. BASEM members will apply for the award initially by submitting the an application via the Good Grants platform, giving a brief outline of the research conducted, the impact of the research, and the details of the author(s) and relevant institution(s). 
  2. BASEM will conduct a check of eligibility and will confirm to the member whether or not BASEM will cover the APCs for their article to be published.
  3. If the eligibility criteria are met, BASEM will confirm via email within 14 working days that BASEM will pay the APC should the article be accepted by BOSEM, and funding still be available for the correlating award year.
  4. The member will be asked to continue to submit their article to BOSEM in the usual way, and declare they are a BASEM member so they can benefit from the discounted APC rate.
  5. The member should not make BOSEM aware of BASEMs involvement in paying the APC at the application stage in the interest of ensuring objectivity and fairness.
  6. All journal articles will still undergo the normal journal reviewing processes by BOSEM.
  7. If BOSEM accepts the article, the member should make BASEM aware as soon as possible to confirm funding is still available for the corresponding award year.
  8. If BASEM confirm funding is available, the member will be able to send the payment link to awards@basem.co.uk for BASEM to process and pay.

  10. The member must ensure BASEM is credited for paying the APC.

  3. All journal articles will still undergo the normal journal reviewing processes by BOSEM.
  4. BASEM will have no involvement with BOSEM’s reviewing process and only those deemed suitable for publication by BOSEM will be published.
  5. BOSEM will be unaware of BASEM’s involvement until after the article has been submitted and approved for publication, therefore ensuring objectivity and fairness.
  6. Upon successful acceptance by BOSEM to publish the submitted article, BASEM will pay the APC on a first come, first served basis.
  7. BASEM will only pay the APC if the BASEM Member 25% Discount is applied. You can find this in your members area.
