The recipient of the award will confirm in writing (signed contract) their acceptance of the award, that they agree to the following terms and conditions and to BASEM’s Privacy Policy:-

1. If not already provided as part of their application, on notification of success the recipient must:
   • submit a letter of support from the university healthcare university department;
   • submit ethical approval for the research.
   • Failure to do so, will result in the offer being rescinded.

2. By applying for the award, the recipient agrees to maintain membership of BASEM for the duration of their course and for a minimum of 2 consecutive years posts graduation.

3. The recipient agrees to submit to BASEM, regular updates in report form including module results if requested, for the duration of their study, in return for a regular instalment of the monetary award. For example:-

   – 1 year study – £1,000 after 6 months, £1,500 on graduation

   – 2 year study – £500 every 6 months and £1,000 on graduation

   – 3 year study – £400 every 6 months and £500 on graduation

4. On completion of the research the recipient of the award will provide a written report for a future issue of BASEM Today (BASEMs quarterly newsletter magazine). This report should highlight the overall experience of studying the MSc, details of the research and the conclusions.

5. The recipient of the award agrees to their image, a short biography and written report being featured in BASEM publications, BASEM website, social media, and future marketing of the BASEM MSc in SEM Bursary.

6. The recipient agrees to complete their MSc and Research. Should this not happen, BASEM reserves the right to rescind the award.

7. After accepting the award, if for any reason the award recipient is unable to complete the MSc/research, the recipient agrees to return any money reimbursed back to BASEM with a 3% interest charge.

8. BASEM requests that the Association be credited regarding the completed research and for any future research/articles written because of receiving this monetary award.

Once logged into your account you will be able to apply to all of BASEMs Awards which are currently open. You are able to save and come back to applications as much as you want prior to the closing date. Any incomplete applications when the application window closes will not be put forward to the Awards Committee. 

Once the closing date has passed, the Awards team check all applications to ensure anonymity before forwarding to the Awards Committee. 

As part of the application, applicants will be asked to provide:

• An introduction explaining the research (max 500 words)
• The research’s Aims & Objectives (max 500 words)
• Your educational Aims & Objectives (max 500 words)
• A statements on how your project meets the objectives of BASEM (max 250 words)
• An EDI statement – see ‘EDI Guide for Applicants’ below (max 200 words) 
• An anonymised CV
• An anonymised letter of support from your university.
• Anonymised ethical approval for the research.

Applicants will receive notice of their success or otherwise 8 weeks after the closing date. Notifications will be sent via email.

To support and promote Equity, Diversity and Inclusivity (EDI) in research all authors must include an EDI statement in their submission. This is in line with the EDI statement requirement initially introduced at the British Journal of Sports Medicine (BJSM). Example EDI statements can be found here.

The EDI statement should provide a brief (max 200 word) response to the following areas, tailored as appropriate for the study design, reporting, and author team:

• Describe whether and how diversity in your study population was planned and recruited. For instance, how did the study design address balance and diversity in the recruitment of participants based on gender, race/ethnicity/culture, socioeconomic level, and representation from marginalized* groups?
• Describe whether and how you addressed diversity in the investigator and author team. For instance, is the author team gender balanced and does it include junior researchers, individuals from marginalized backgrounds, and perspectives from multiple disciplines? Please note: It is not necessary to disclose individual backgrounds or identities. Authors should only report on areas they are comfortable in disclosing.
• Describe whether and how your data collection methods were planned to allow for inclusivity. For instance, did the study account for the participants’ accessibility needs, regional geographic differences, education, and socioeconomic levels?
• Describe whether and how your study considered equity in the analysis and interpretation of results. For instance, did the study consider gendered and racialized inequities, socioeconomic disadvantage, and inequities in marginalised communities?

In addition to the points above, we advise authors to:

1. ensure the title specifies the population described and does not generalise,
2. provide detailed participant demographics within the Results, 
3. include comments on the generalisability and limitations of the sample population

The EDI statement must be included in submissions, or the submission may not be considered. The EDI statement will not be marked. 

Marginalised groups include:

• Women and girls
• Black, Indigenous, and people of colour
• People from the LGBTQIA2S+ community
• People with disabilities
• People with complex/chronic illnesses
• People from the Global South or Far North
• People from low- or middle-income countries or contexts
• People from stateless communities
• People displaced from or living in conflict zones

All applications are submitted via the Good Grants platform. Once the application window is closed, applications are checked to ensure anonymity by the Awards team, before being forwarded to the BASEM Awards Committee. Each member of the committee will review the applications against a standard marking template and scores will be collated. The application with the highest marks will be awarded.

The Awards Committee retains the freedom to award to more than 1 applicant, therefore splitting the prize money of £2,500. 

The judge’s decision is final.

The recommendation(s) of the Awards Committee will be ratified by the BASEM Non Executive Board.

The Awards Committee may not make an award if the applications are not of an adequate standard.
