The Sir Roger Bannister Award seeks to recognise a lifetime’s outstanding contribution to the field of Sport and Exercise Medicine. The award was instigated in 2004 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Sir Roger’s 4-minute mile and is awarded on a yearly basis.
Nominations are requested from BASEM members and the recipient is chosen by the BASEM Non-Executive Board.

- Nominees must receive 2 nominations from 2 current members of BASEM.
- The nominee need not be a member of BASEM.Â
- The nominator should submitting their nomination through BASEMs award platform, Good Grants. Nominations will not be accepted otherwise.
- Nominations should include contact details for the nominee and be accompanied by a short citation of no more than 1,000 words stating a history of the nominees’ achievements and why you believe the individual concerned would be a worthy recipient of the Sir Roger Bannister Award.
- There is no limit to the number of times an individual can be nominated, however, previous winners may not be nominated for a second time.
All nominations are submitted via the Good Grants platform. Once the application window is closed, applications are checked by the Awards team, before being forwarded to the BASEM Non-Executive Board.
Each member of the board will review the applications and vote on a non-disclosed basis. In the event of a tie, the Chair of the Association carries the deciding vote.
The successful nominee will be contacted but will not be announced to the membership until the actual conference presentation.
The successful nominee will be informed of their success directly from BASEM and will be invited to the next BASEM Annual Conference to receive their award.

- The recipient of the award has not previously been awarded the Sir Roger Bannister Award.
- The recipient of the award agrees to their success being announced in the BASEM Today, BASEM website and Social Media.
