Keynote Speakers
Rehabilitation: The Past, Present and Future.
Dr Enda King PhD
Based at Aspetar, Enda is the Head of Elite Performance and Development. He is a world leading rehabilitation expert specialising in hip and groin and the ACL. Enda has previously led the development and delivery of ACL and athletic groin pain clinical and research pathways and managed an elite athlete rehabilitation programme catering for players from the Premier League, NBA, NFL, NHL, Premiership Rugby, European Tour Golf, National Hunt Racing, AFL and UFC. As an educator, has presented at scientific conferences, courses and workshops and consulted for elite teams worldwide – in particular with relation to ACL rehabilitation, athletic groin pain and chronic and recurrent lower limb muscle and tendon issues. As an academic he has over 50 peer reviewed publications and book chapters relating to rehabilitation.
The Female Athlete in Training: From Body Fat to Energy Deficiency.
Professor Kirsty Elliott-Sale and Professor Karen Birch
Kirsty is the Head of the Centre of Excellence for Women in Sport and Professor of Female Endocrinology and Exercise Physiology at Manchester Metropolitan University Institute of Sport. Kirsty is a world-leading researcher in the female athlete space, in particular the menstrual cycle, hormonal contraceptives, and menstrual dysfunction. Kirsty was named in the fifty most influential women in sport by The Telegraph in December 2024 for her impact on top-flight athletes and everyday exercisers alike.
Karen is a Professor of Exercise Science at the University of Leeds (UoL) with 35+years in academia and over 100 publications to her name. She is currently the Executive Dean of the Faculty of Biological Sciences which counts the well established UoL Masters in Sport and Exercise Medicine as one of its postgraduate courses. Karen was an associate editor of the Biomedical Central Sports Science Medical and Rehabilitation Journal for six years. She has a range of research interests including physical activity in women and has been a well regarded innovator in the female athlete space for many decades.
Breaking Boundaries: Looking Back to Move Forward
Dr Charlotte Cowie
Dr Charlotte Cowie has had a 30-year career as a sports medicine specialist in elite and professional sports. She was the first female club doctor to work in men’s professional football and the first ever doctor for the England Women’s football team. Her experience spans private musculoskeletal (MSK) medicine, as well as CMO (Chief Medical Officer) and team physician roles across various sports, including taekwondo and tennis. However, her primary focus and passion lie in football, where she initially served as the club doctor for Millwall Football Club, later becoming the Head of Medical Services at both Fulham FC and Tottenham Hotspur FC. More recently, she held the roles of Head of Performance Medicine and CMO at the Football Association.
Dr Cowie has also contributed to 4 Summer Olympic Games, including her role as CMO for TeamGB at the Paris 2024 Games. She currently consults at the Cleveland Clinic London.

The British Association of Sports and Exercise Medicine would like to invite submissions covering any clinical aspect of sport and exercise medicine; anything that relates to the health, well-being, function, illness or injury management of patients or athletes.

Forging Ahead - A Message from the Conference Chair
“Our 2025 conference programme will cover our core themes in SEM: Team Care, MSK, Physical Activity and this year a focus on day 2 on the Female Athlete. We really want to ensure a strong integrated research thread throughout, and this will be reflected through presentations by researchers and academics embedded into the conference faculty and sessions.
We are looking forward to welcoming Dr Enda King on day 1, a world leading rehabilitation expert in hip and groin and the ACL based at Aspetar. On day 2 we are delighted to be joined by Professor Kirsty Elliott-Sale who heads up the Manchester Institute of Sport’s Centre of Excellence for Women in Sport and another world leading researcher in the female athlete space.
We will also be joined by Professor Ben Jones, who is doing some stellar work in concussion currently focusing on instrumented mouthguards in both Rugby League and Union. He will be building on the popular session last year that he chaired.
Our popular workshops will continue, with workshops in ultrasound and careers, amongst others being planned.”

The Royal Armouries and New Dock Hall together form one of the largest purpose-built conference and exhibition venues in Leeds, with the capacity to host up to 2,500 delegates. Leeds Bradford Airport is the closest airport to the Royal Armouries and New Dock Hall and is well connected to major UK cities and several international destinations.

BASEM has two award categories open for submissions; the Tom Donaldson Poster Prize for Undergraduate applicants and the Association Prize for Sports and Exercise Medicine for applicants who are Postgraduate level and above.
