Surgical Decision Making in Shoulder Sports Injuries

The surgical management of instability has changed significantly in the last few years. Many new different procedures have been described to stabilise shoulders. Mr Carlos Cobiella will go through these procedures and the specific indications for each one.

Mr Carlos Cobiellaย graduated from medical school at the Universidad Autรณnoma in Madrid and completed his Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgery training at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital (RNOH). He developed an interest in Shoulder and Elbow Surgery and received further training in this area under the care of Messrs Bayley, Calvert, and Lambert at the Shoulder and Elbow Unit at the RNOH, and Professor Birch at the Peripheral Nerve Injury Unit.

He was appointed Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at the Whittington Hospital in 2003 and moved to University College London Hospital (UCLH) in 2005 to pursue his career in a more academic environment. There, he had the opportunity to develop the Upper Limb Service.

He is Honorary Consultant Shoulder and Elbow and Sports Surgeon at University College London Hospitals NHS Trust. He is a founding member of The Shoulder Practice and Head of the Upper Limb Section of the Institute of Sport, Exercise and Health at UCL. He collaborates closely with the English Institute of Sport, UK Athletics, the British Olympic Association, and professional sports teams. He was part of the medical team at the London 2012 Olympics and is the NFL Upper Limb Surgeon in Europe.

Carlos enjoys all aspects of shoulder and elbow surgery, including the treatment of sports injuries, rotator cuff disease, and fractures. He has a particular interest in arthroscopic techniques.

He is a member of international study groups developing new techniques and is a regular faculty member on numerous arthroscopic and sports injury surgery courses, both nationally and internationally. In addition to training medical students and junior doctors, Mr Cobiella directly supervises the UCH Shoulder and Elbow Fellow. He is convenor of the London Shoulder Meeting, continues to publish in his field, and regularly presents his findings at scientific meetings.
