She will discuss the shift from passive use to active, informed application of AI tools, highlighting the importance of critical understanding in a rapidly evolving technological landscape.
Dr VanBaak will then address the origins and implications of bias in AI systems, how it arises through data, algorithms, and clinical application, and its potential impact on diagnosis, treatment, and equitable access to care. The talk will conclude with practical guidance on ethical AI use, including how to appropriately cite AI tools in clinical documentation, research, and publications.

Dr Karin VanBaak is an American Sport and Exercise Medicine Physician and Clinical Researcher. As a clinician, she specialises in women’s health and bone health in sports medicine. As a researcher, she has expertise in the implementation science of technology in healthcare. Now residing in the UK, she serves as an Adjunct Assistant Professor and Interdisciplinary Sports Medicine Programming Consultant at the University of Colorado, where she is also completing her MSc in Clinical Science.
