Dr Natalie Shur will discuss mechanistic insights into GLP-1โrelated weight loss and pain reduction in knee osteoarthritis. Her presentation will highlight ongoing research into metabolic and inflammatory pathways, addressing how systemic modulation may influence synovial inflammation, joint pain, and longer-term structural outcomes.
Dr Natalie Shur graduated from the University of Edinburgh with Honours in Medicine in 2012, and also undertook an Intercalated Degree (1st Class) in Sports Science. After graduation, she secured an academic run-through national training number in Sport and Exercise Medicine (SEM) in the East Midlands Deanery. She completed her PhD at the University of Nottingham in 2024, investigating the effect of immobilisation (comparing an acute and chronic bed rest model) and musculoskeletal injury (using an ankle fracture model) on muscle metabolic health.
Natalie has won several scholarships and awards for her work, including the European Society for Clinical Nutrition and Metabolism Research Fellowship and a Young Investigator Award at the European College of Sport Science (ECSS) Congress in 2019. She is the author of the bookย Sport and Exercise Medicine OSCEs: An Essential Revision Guideย and she won the Macleod Medal in 2020 as the most distinguished candidate sitting the Faculty of SEM diploma exams. Natalie currently chairs the Women in SEM Trainee Group and sits on the Faculty of SEM Equity, Diversity, and Inclusivity Committee.
Dr Shur currently holds several research grants as both a Principal Investigator and Co-Investigator, with her work focussed on two main areas: 1) the impact of aberrant metabolic health (e.g., obesity and glucose regulation) on musculoskeletal conditions, and 2) the musculoskeletal sequelae of menopause. She currently holds a BMA Foundation Grant investigating the biomechanical and metabolic effects of pharmacological weight loss with glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists on knee pain.
