This conference session is strategically designed to equip Team Physicians with foundational knowledge of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Large Language Models (LLMs), moving them from passive technology consumers to active, critical drivers of these tools within the sports organisation. Dr Karin VanBaak,Dr Ed VanBaak and Dr Liza Pekoลกak will demystify AI model construction, critically examine sources of bias to ensure equitable athlete care, and provide practical strategies for iterative engagement. By focussing on practical applications within the athlete clinical care continuum - from diagnostics and performance optimisation to documentation - attendees will gain the strategic skills necessary to critically evaluate tech and tech partnerships for team care, as well as engage with AI tools to enhance athlete clinical care safely and effectively. The session includes a specialised case study on using AI and digital tools for personalized training and safety monitoring for active pregnant women. Attendees will gain the knowledge and confidence to evaluate AI solutions, integrate them thoughtfully, and drive innovation within their systems for improved athlete outcomes.
Dr Karin VanBaak is an American Sport and Exercise Medicine Physician and Clinical Researcher. As a clinician, she specialises in women’s health and bone health in sports medicine. As a researcher, she has expertise in the implementation science of technology in healthcare. Now residing in the UK, she serves as an Adjunct Assistant Professor and Interdisciplinary Sports Medicine Programming Consultant at the University of Colorado, where she is also completing her MSc in Clinical Science.
