Groin Injuries - Acute rehabilitation

This talk will explore evidence-informed principles and clinical decision-making in the acute management of groin injuries in sport.

Key discussion points will include:

  • Identifying key impairments and setting acute-phase priorities
  • Criteria-based progression from the bed to field-based loading
  • Integrating objective strength, range, and functional testing to guide return-to-play

The session aims to bridge research and applied practice, providing clinicians with strategies to optimise recovery following acute groin injuries.

Senior Physiotherapist, Aspetar Orthopaedic and Sports Medicine Hospital, Qatar

Mr Dermot Simpson is a Senior Physiotherapist at Aspetar Sports Hospital with expertise in hamstring, rectus femoris, and groin injuries. He graduated from University College Dublin in 2011 and went on to complete a Masters degree in Sports Physiotherapy in 2014.

Before joining Aspetar in 2015, he worked with elite-level Gaelic football athletes in Ireland, culminating in an All-Ireland final win in 2012. Over the past decade at Aspetar, Dermot has treated numerous high-performance athletes, including Olympic champions and World Cup winners. He was part of the Qatar National Football Team’s medical staff for two years, contributing to their Asian Cup victory in 2019.

Mr Simpson has recently presented at global conferences in cities such as Melbourne, São Paulo, and Milan. He also served as the lead author of the recently published The Aspetar Way – Hamstring Injury Pathway.
