Traditional sports injury prevention strategies often fail to account for the unique experiences and needs of women and gender-expansive athletes. This presentation introduces an explicitly feminist approach to sports injury prevention, advocating for a comprehensive, inclusive, and justice-focused framework that addresses the ways in which the prevailing sports culture has historically marginalised women and gender-expansive individuals.
This presentation will provide a critical feminist analysis of sports injury epidemiology, exploring how a feminist perspective can transform our understanding by emphasising the importance of intersectionality - acknowledging how sexism, racism, classism, ableism, queerphobia, and other forms of oppression intersect to impact injury risk and our understanding thereof.
By adopting a feminist approach to sports injury prevention, we can create a more equitable and supportive landscape for all athletes. This presentation aims to provide a roadmap for integrating feminist principles into sports injury prevention practices, ultimately embodying an inclusive and equitable approach that transcends traditional gender norms and fosters an environment where everyone, regardless of gender, can participate and thrive.
