Osteoarthritis (OA) is a leading cause of disability worldwide, affecting nearly 600 million people. It imposes a significant burden of pain and symptoms, resulting in substantial work absenteeism, presenteeism, and early retirement. Although OA is more common with age, approximately 15% of cases occur in young people following an injury, particularly to the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) and meniscus, often within 2-3 years of the initial trauma. This study aims to understand the use of serum biomarkers to predict the development of post-traumatic osteoarthritis in a high-risk military population, facilitating early identification and the development of targeted, early preventative interventions.
