Beyond Steroids. Are Orthobiologics the answer?

3:35
Thursday
Ricoh Lounge North

Injection therapies have been used for a long time, with steroid injections being the most widely used intervention. However, there is still ongoing discussion regarding the efficacy of steroids, especially in the long term.

Orthobiologics, such as PRP and stem cells, offer the promise of a longer-lasting, disease-modifying alternative. But is this truly the case?

Osteoarthritis and tendon injuries, whether acute or chronic, are very common, particularly among athletes. Is this the best solution for treating cartilage injuries, early knee osteoarthritis, and tendon pathologies alongside evidence-based rehabilitation?

In this talk, we will explore what the current literature says about how orthobiologics can help treat osteoarthritis and tendon pathologies. Is there a dose-dependent effect? Does the composition of PRP matter? How do we determine this? Is there a benefit to combining PRP with hyaluronic acid?

What does the future hold? Some evidence suggests that autologous adipose-derived mesenchymal stem cells have a positive impact on joint function, pain, quality of life, and cartilage regeneration. And, as with PRP, could there be a dose-dependent effect?

Finally, why is it important to deliver orthobiologics under ultrasound guidance?
